FAQ's

I understand that you will naturally have questions about the design process and what happens, so I have tried to cover the most frequently asked questions.

How long have you been in business?

I have run my own web design business since July 2015, but have been making websites since 2008 for myself such as a highly successful party blog and other websites related to businesses that I have run.

In 2015 I was asked to design a website for a local business, who then referred me to another business and it grew from there.

In this time I have completed many different course related to web design, WordPress, SEO and other business related courses – including a business management degree – but I am mostly self taught and I enjoy constantly learning and acting on new ideas.

What types of clients do you work with most frequently.

I normally work with women entrepreneurs who run their own businesses from home around their families.

But I welcome any kind of business small or large run by females or males.

May I see your portfolio?

Of course! If you want to view my portfolio then please click here. These are websites that I have fully designed throughout the years from start to finish – although there are probably even more that I have made over and updated.

How many people will be working on the site? Who do I speak with / who does the building / designing?

It’s usually just me who does everything, so it will be me who will be your point of contact.

I also have a close working relationship with other services that you may need such as copywriting and graphic design.

Do you know / understand SEO?

I have a medium knowledge and understanding of SEO – more than just basic but I wouldn’t call myself an expert.

On my first website I gained 40,000 visitors per month with SEO techniques on my party ideas blog and can advise you on basic improvements to your site to be able to rank in the search engines.

Please note that ranking in the search engines is not a guaranteed process and does not happen over night. It also requires a lot of work from you and is more than just adding a keyword to a page.

Do you host the site or do I?

You will be asked to purchase a domain for your website and if you already have hosting you are more than welcome to continue to use that.

I do, however, offer a free years hosting with all my website design packages and you are more than welcome to swap your hosting to me at any point.

The hosting I offer is provided by Eco Hosting, based in Cardiff, and has a renewal rate of:

Basic – £30 per year

Advanced – £50 per year

Will I have full access to the site once it is launched?

Quite simple – YES!

I firmly believe that everything to do with your website should be in your name and that you own everything – it is part of your business after all.

Along with this I also give you full access to everything – hosting and WordPress (which your website is built with)

There are no restrictions to this, you do not have to pay me for any further services once your website is complete but I do offer addition support options.

What happens if my site goes down?

Your website will be hosted by Eco hosting, based in Cardiff – which has relatively little downtime. Their servers have also just been recently upgraded with a more improved and faster server. If there is a time where there is planned maintenance on the server I am informed and I will notify you through WHMCS (you should have received a login when  your hosting was set up). I also post about any planned maintenance, downtime or issues on my Facebook Page.

If there is a problem with your website that is not hosting related then you can contact me and we can discuss the issue – please note that if it is not an issue caused by the hosting or myself then there may be a charge.

How are updates handled?

Whilst your site is being designed any updates will be done by myself.

Once the site is passed over to yourself you are then responsible for keeping your site update. This is really important to ensure your site is not only kept up to date and working in the correct order but also for security measures.

If you wish to continue having the site updated and backed up by myself you are welcome to purchase my monthly maintenance plan.

How does email work for my site?

You will have access to the control panel for your hosting, which gives you the ability to create unlimited domain emails for your business. You can then access these emails through webmail in the Control Panel or through WHMCS.

If you wish to set up your emails in a separate mail client – such as Outlook, Mail or Gmail. You will be given settings and instructions on how to do this but it is your own responsibility to set this up correctly. I can, however, offer you further advice if there is a problem.

Will you install Google Analytics?

I will install the Google Analyticator plugin and give you instructions on how to link this to your Google Analytics account – which is free to set up and I can advise you on how to do this.

Once linked with your account you will be able to view your analytics on the WordPress dashboard and on Google Analytics website.

Will you verify the site with Google Search Console?

I will advise you how to do this through your own Google account.

Do you use forms? Are those forms held in a data base on my website or simply sent to my inbox?

I will add a contact form module to your website and all responses will be sent to your email address that you specify I use on setup.

This will then be tested with yourself and if there is a problem with your contact form and you are not receiving responses once you have full control over your site then please contact me.

What happens if you (designer) go on a vacation and I need you?

I don’t go on many holidays and if I do I am still contactable via email. Although I do not check this as often as when I am working but I will provide you details of what to do in an emergency – i.e. if your site goes down etc.

Do you build e-commerce websites, if yes, which platform will you use?

Yes.

The platform that I use on all my sites is Woocommerce as I find that it is simple to use and integrates best with WordPress.

There are also so many features that you can use now and as your business grows.

What types of security will be on my website?

Security and backups are exceptionally important on your website, as if your site is hacked you could potentially lose everything.

Plugins that will be installed on your site are:

Wordfence Security – Providing you with many security features along with alerts to any suspicious activity on your site

Login Lockdown – Which blocks IP addresses after a certain number of wrong password attempts

Updraft Plus – A free to use back up plugin that once set up backs up your site automatically

Please note it is YOUR responsibility to update and backup your site (unless you have a monthly maintenance plan) and I do NOT keep any back ups of your site if things go wrong.

This is VERY important and if anything does happen and you lose your site you are not entitled to a refund or is it my responsibility.

Do you use free or premium plugins and themes? If premium do I have the license key or do you? Will they need to be renewed at some point and if yes, how much will that cost?

All of the plugins that I use are free to use – unless there is a particular feature that you need on your site that requires a paid plugin – although this is rare. If this is the case you are responsible for purchasing that plugin unless it is available with a developers licence and I would use it on further sites.

The exception to this is if you decide on a different theme other than Divi and you wish to use the Divi Builder to build your pages (please see below).

The theme that I use on all of my website is Divi, which is a premium theme. I install Divi on your site as part of my licence. If you wish to update the theme (or the Divi plugin) you will need to purchase your own licence, which is around £70-£80 per year. The other alternative is if you purchase my monthly maintenance plan then updates are included for the time you are on the plan ONLY.

If you wish to use a premium theme other than Divi (and that I do not have in my library of themes that I have licence to use) then it is your own responsibility to purchase that theme as it will not be included as part of your package.

How long will it take to get my site live?

I aim to get your site live within 2 months but this can often be quicker – it depends on how quickly you approve a design you like and provide me with the content for your website.

Also you will not have full access to your website and the ability for it to be live until payment has been made in full.

How many sites do you work on at the same time?

This can vary, dependant on the size of the website and how complex it is but I generally work on around 4-6 websites per month.

Will you be creating any new accounts for me (MailChimp, a Gmail, etc) if yes, how do I get logins to those accounts?

If you do not have a Mailchimp or Gmail account I can create these for you and give you the login details or you can create them yourself and allow me access to them.

Do you set up social media profiles?

No, this is your responsibility but I do ask that you provide me with the full URLs of your social media profiles so I can link to them from your site.

Will we have a contract?

Yes, I will provide you with a contract that you will need to electronically sign before we start working together.

Do I supply the images or you? If you, how do I know they fall under the creative commons and I am free to use them? If they will be purchased, do I get approval before you buy?

Images are supplied by you and MUST NOT BE COPYRIGHT – unless you own the copyright.

I will not accept any images taken from Google unless you can prove you own the copyright or that they are royalty free.

A good source for free image that I use is www.pixabay.com

I can, however, help you source images and may allow you to use one an image from my paid stock photo account – but you will not own the copyright.

Who writes the copy?

I am not a copywriter so will not be writing any of your copy. This is your responsibility along with providing it to myself in a timely fashion for me to be able to progress with the design of your site.

I work very closely with a copywriter and can provide you with her details if you wish to hire someone to do this for you using her charging structure.

What are your expectations of me as a client?

The clients that I work with best and who’s websites are completed quicker and that they love are those who have some idea of what they want and are looking for in terms of design.

You may not have a clue of what you want and in that case I suggest that you book in for one of my planning sessions (available in person or via Skype at my hourly rate) before purchasing a website package so that your website is not held up. If you decide to then purchase a web design package this cost will be taken off the total price.

I will also keep in contact with you throughout the process, to show you designs, ask questions, bounce ideas of you and also ask you to complete a set up of a certain plugin or provide content.

Your timely response is appreciated not to hold up the time it takes for your site to go live.

How many revisions can I make during the building process?

Revisions of content are your responsibility and are able to be changed by yourself.

In terms of the design you are able to make changes and suggestions as we go along but once the site is finalised any further changes will be charged at my hourly rate.

Will I get training on using the site after it’s launched?

I provide a set of training videos, that can be accessed from your WordPress dashboard, showing you WordPress basics and how to edit and customise your site further.

I will also provide you with a half hour Skype or Zoom call at the end of the process for you to go over any questions you may have or things that you are not sure of and need extra support with.

Please note you MUST have watched the videos first as they provide the basics and this half hour is better spent on something that you are unsure of not what you have laready been provided with.

What kind of support can I expect after the site is launched?

For the first month after your site is launched I will provide you with free email support for anything you are not sure on or if something goes wrong.

You will get continued access to the training videos and any further changes you wish to make will be charged at my hourly rate or you are welcome to join my paid membership club – that offers not only support but a large selection of videos, PDFs and how to’s to further develop your site.
